Panzer Dragoon Zwei (パンツァードラグーン ツヴァイ), also known as Panzer Dragoon II and Panzer Dragoon II Zwei, is an "on-rails" shoot 'em up game released exclusively for the Sega Saturn. It was the second Panzer Dragoon game released but it is a prequel of the series. It was developed by Team Andromeda, one of Sega's internal development studios.

Story

The game is set prior to the original Panzer Dragoon against the backdrop of a war between the Empire led by its sixth Emperor and the nation of Meccania over remnants of the Ancient Age. Jean-Luc Lundi lives in a superstitious village where mutant coolias are killed as unlucky omens. Lundi defies the village tradition by adopting a mutant coolia with wings and a glowing green throat, naming it Lagi. After Lagi is full grown, Lundi takes the coolia out to try to get him to fly. While Lundi takes Lagi out, an automated Ancient Age ship called Shelcoof destroys Lundi's village. Lagi fires at Shelcoof with lasers from his mouth, the trademark attack of dragons from the Ancient Age. Lundi and Lagi pursue Shelcoof in parallel with the forces of Meccania, who seek to control Shelcoof.

Gameplay

The game is a rail shooter like its predecessor. The player controls a dragon, Lagi, and its rider, Lundi, through an aiming reticle that can be moved over the whole screen with the D-Pad, with enemies appearing across four quadrants tracked by an on-screen radar. The dragon follows the reticle, allowing the player to dodge obstacles and enemy fire. Lagi initially cannot fly and runs along the ground in the early stages instead. The player can pan the field of view by moving the reticle with Left and Right or can rotate the view 90 degrees at a time with L and R. Though the game is on rails and largely follows predetermined paths, stages now have branching paths at certain points, with the player's choice affecting the scenery as well as the enemy types and bosses that the player encounters.

Enemies can be defeated with Lundi's handgun, which is fired by pressing A, B, or C, or Lagi's homing lasers, which can lock on up to eight enemies by holding A, B, or C while moving the reticle over them. A meter fills as enemies are shot down; when it is green, the player can use the berserk attack, a rain of lasers from Lagi that targets all enemies on screen until the bar is emptied, by pressing X, Y, or Z.

The dragon's health is indicated by a bar in the corner of the screen. It takes damage from enemies and from obstacles. The dragon has part of its health restored at the beginning of each stage. The game ends if the dragon runs out of health, but it can be continued from the beginning of the current stage as long as the player has credits remaining. Each stage is scored based on enemy kill ratio, damage taken, the number of continues used, and the time taken to complete each section. During the game, the dragon unlocks alternate forms based on the routes taken and points accrued. There are six forms available, with a final form unlocking for the final boss.

After completing the game, Pandra's Box is unlocked, which is an extras menu that gives players the ability to alter dragon statistics, change the game difficulty, access new weapons, alter or replay individual levels, and replay cutscenes. To unlock everything in Pandra's Box, the player must have a total number of clears of at least 20, a total playtime of at least 30 hours, a best shot down ratio of 100%, or a save game from Panzer Dragoon Saga saved to the Saturn's internal memory.
